Over 8 million children in India are unable to avail of their right to education, leading to a growing gap between the expectations and results of government owned initiatives.
Sunaayy Foundation has, since May 2009, been implementing a pilot project that involves imparting basic education to 50 children in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. The children, aged 3 to12, attend outdoor makeshift classes held each day between 10am and 1pm at an MCD park. They are divided into study groups based on their physical, intellectual and learning abilities, and taught accordingly.
Basics of reading and writing in Hindi and English as well as Arithmetic are covered through interactive methods in these classes. Also included in the sessions are physical education, personal hygiene, social sciences and art and craft.
