TEACHERS AND STAFF PROFILING -
For ensuring high ownership, an increased responsibility towards self and others in the team and a long term sense of development towards self growth, certain key factors have to be kept in mind –
Area and Background -
Teachers belong to the same slum/community where the kids reside.
Teaching in Sunaayy is spread through word of mouth thus teacher recruitment happens mostly through references.
The basic qualification is to be able to teach kids between 3 and 12 years of age.
Differentiators -
Residing in the same community/area gives the teachers a sense of – responsibility towards the children and their families, an ownership to nurture/coach the kids due to a growing attachment and close proximity to their families.
Recruiting through references from a similar kind of background helps set the right expectations faster and results in an increased bonding from within the team itself.
Their background gives them an added humility thus they show the intent to get trained and learn further to enhance their own skills and abilities towards self growth in the long run
TEACHERS AND STAFF TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT -
The key to our success are the ‘Gurus’ and ‘Facilitators’ running our show.
Challenges
The very differentiating factors of our model (also a low cost one) poses a challenge for us and considering the teachers and the staff background, it calls for focused actions on their skill areas.
Our model however boasts of teacher success stories with limited scope of failures due to the systematic approach we take towards their training and development.
Focussed Actions
Identifying Skill Gaps at an Individual Teacher Level – This activity starts off right at the time a teacher joins us.
Action Points noted and Improvement tracked – This kicks off once the skill gaps are identified and is periodically reviewed.
Mentoring from the immediate High Level Team – Individual teachers are coached, mentored by our extended team of volunteers, mentors.
Training & Development Sessions – These sessions are held from time to time with follow up sessions and are normally a group exercise.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES -
Our model appreciates local teachers and staff joining us.
It helps provide employment opportunities to women who come from the same area and background as the kids but who have had an exposure to some basic formal education in the past.
